A campaign of love, comfort, and hope ๐ค one granny, one home, one heart at a time.
๐ Our Story
This campaign began with my Granny, Hazel De Beer, born in 1946, a kind, strong woman with a lifelong love for reading and helping others. Over time, her health has declined ❤ she now faces constant pain, limited mobility, and several serious medical conditions.
Our mission is to help her live comfortably and heal at home, surrounded by love, safety, and care. We want to ensure she can keep her dignity and peace as she recovers and enjoys her golden years.
❤❤❤
๐ฉบ Understanding Granny’s Medical Situation
Granny’s medical reports show that she is living with multiple chronic and painful conditions that affect her lungs, spine, and circulation, making everyday life challenging.
Here’s what the doctors found ❤ explained in simple terms for everyone to understand:
๐ซ Chest and Breathing (CT Scan – March 2025)
The scan showed bilateral pulmonary emphysema, which means both her lungs are damaged from long-term strain and breathing problems.
She also has right heart strain, a condition that often happens when the lungs make it harder for the heart to pump blood — this can cause swelling, shortness of breath, and fatigue.
Doctors also noted atherosclerotic disease, which means there is narrowing of blood vessels due to cholesterol buildup, affecting blood flow.
Despite all this, her stomach, bladder, and other organs are normal — that’s a small blessing.
๐ฆด Back and Spine
Granny’s spine shows degenerative changes — specifically between the lower back bones (L4/L5).
She also has loss of disc space and bone thickening, causing severe back pain and making it very hard for her to walk or sit comfortably for long periods.
Doctors mentioned exaggerated kyphosis (a forward curve of the upper back), which explains her posture and chronic pain.
๐ฉน Septic Wound and Infection (Referral Report – May 2025)
The clinic diagnosed her with a septic wound, meaning it was infected and painful.
The note says she suffers from constant severe pain and needs medical assistance to manage and clean the wound to prevent further infection.
She is also listed as hypertensive (high blood pressure) and diabetic, which slow down healing and increase her risk of infection.
๐ถ♀ Mobility & Daily Care (Orthopaedic Nurse Chart)
The report confirms that Granny needs help walking and often uses a wheelchair or walking frame.
Her condition is marked as “stable,” but she needs assistance daily.
She lives with hypertension, cholesterol issues, and mobility difficulties. These conditions together make independent living nearly impossible.

Granny Hazel’s Story – From the Castle to the Cape | Live Comfortably and Heal at Home Update
Today, I had the most beautiful conversation with Granny Hazel ❤ a moment filled with history, love, and memories that deserve to be written down so they’ll never fade.
Granny’s roots stretch far across the ocean. Her mother’s family, the Rathbows, came from Ireland, and her father’s side, the Woods, from England. Her grandfather, Sir Henry Harry Wood, once served as a protector in the castle for Queen Elizabeth. Generations later, they made their way to South Africa ❤ a new home filled with challenges and dreams.
Granny’s mother, Miss Kyle Veld, was Afrikaans, and her father, Henry Reginal Harry Clarence Wood, was English. Growing up, Granny spoke only English, but her friends were Afrikaans ❤ and that’s how fate introduced her to the love of her life. ❤
Her future husband, my Grandpa, lived across the street. He spoke only Afrikaans, and Granny, ever determined, learned the language at the age of 14 just to understand and talk to him. Over time, she became fluent in Afrikaans ❤ though she still preferred reading and writing in English.
When Granny could still see, she loved books ❤ love stories, true crime, dramas, and especially those black-and-white movies that she could lose herself in for hours.
She chose love early on, marrying young and becoming a mother to nine children. Only four of them remain today ❤ my mom (the eldest), Ursula (the middle daughter), Keith (the twin son and survivor), and Jackie (the youngest).
Life hasn’t been easy for Granny’s children either. Two of her daughters are unemployed, her son struggles to care for his disabled wife and two children, and Ursula, though working, carries heavy responsibilities at home ❤ still helping as much as she can to support Granny financially.
❤❤❤
๐ป Her Ongoing Struggle and a Hope for Healing
Granny Hazel has lost so much along her journey ๐ช loved ones, her independence, and most painfully, her sight. Losing her vision has been one of the hardest battles she’s ever faced.
Some family members say she’s confused at times, but I see something else ๐ต a woman who remembers hope.
She once spoke of a time when doctors told her there was a chance ❤ an operation that could have helped her eyesight, costing around R20,000. Those medical records are lost now, and we no longer have the doctor’s contact details. But I believe her, and I believe she deserves another chance ❤ even if it’s just a new opinion, or a professional who can help her learn to adapt and regain confidence.
Some days, Granny feels so tired of the pain that she wishes she could simply rest forever. Those are the days that break my heart the most. But she also smiles when she hears her grandkids laugh, or when she feels the warmth of a caring hand.
She gave all of us love, and now it’s time for us ๐ช and for anyone who still believes in kindness ๐ to give back.
๐ช๐ช๐ช
๐ How You Can Help
Granny Hazel’s BackaBuddy campaign – “Live Comfortably and Heal at Home” – helps us provide the medical supplies, food, and comfort she needs daily.
You can also send her something special directly from her Amazon Wishlist, like a warm blanket, walking stick, or simple household aid that helps her adapt to her blindness with dignity.
Every donation, every share, and every prayer matters. ๐ผ
Because healing isn’t only about medicine ๐ต it’s about love, hope, and helping someone remember that their life still matters deeply.
I can't wait to talk to Granny again. I have many questions about her past, or should I say History. If she were not in my life, I would not exist. "Wow. Say that again, she was my beginning. I love these stories. I will update soon with a new story

A Journey of Healing: Granny Hazel's Story*
Hello, beautiful souls.
Today, I want to share an update about my dear Granny Hazel, who,
despite the challenges she faces, continues to inspire me with her resilience.
Life has thrown many obstacles her way since Grandpa passed over 25 years ago,
and each day has felt like a struggle. Yet, through all of it, one thing
remains true: her spirit reflects the beauty of a flower that can bloom despite
harsh conditions.
It’s a profound reminder that, like blossoms, we too have the
capacity to heal and grow, no matter the circumstances life presents. Granny
has always believed in the power of second chances, and I try to embody that
belief in my own life, taking her lessons to heart.
Even though her world has become a bit darker without her sight
and she often feels alone in our home, we are committed to making her
surroundings as comfortable and supportive as possible. A simple driving force
in her daily life is the comfort of her memories ๐ of days spent caring for the
family and ensuring everything was in place. I can still hear her voice in the
mornings, the smell of porridge wafting through the house, and the laughter
shared with Grandpa. Those memories illuminate the shadows that sometimes
stretch across her heart.
Granny has been struggling to maintain her dignity, feeling
trapped in a world where she cannot see and often needs assistance. It's
heart-wrenching to witness her frustration, especially when she had always been
the one to care for others so lovingly. I remember a recent moment when I
visited her, kissed her goodnight, and she unexpectedly startled awake, unsure
of where she was, raising her hands to plead silently for reassurance. It broke
my heart.
We’re working on finding ways to help her regain her independence
with dignity. I’m reaching out to you, my wonderful community ๐ if you have any
suggestions for resources, especially for a walking stick designed for the
visually impaired or a proper chair toilet for her room, I’d be immensely
grateful. Every little bit helps us bring a ray of light back into her life.
You see, while Granny may feel lost in a dark room, my mission is
to ensure she knows that light still exists. God has a hand in our journeys,
deciding our beginnings and endings, but he also gives us the strength to face
our trials. We will advocate for her, honoring her spirit until her last
breath.
Thank you for being a part of this journey with us. Your love,
your prayers, and your suggestions mean the world to us. Let’s keep growing
together, like wildflowers in a field, no matter the storms we face!
With love and gratitude,
❤❤❤

๐ Granny Hazel Update – A Day of Tears, Strength, and Hope
Today was one of the hardest days to witness. My cousin video-called me while cleaning Granny Hazel’s wound, and the sound of her crying… it broke me. She cried like a baby from the pain, whispering that giving birth to her 9 children was easier than this. No one should ever have to suffer like that.
And yet ๐ง even through tears ๐ช she still fights.
She still tries.
She still holds on.
Granny Hazel raised me for most of my life.
She shaped me,
protected me,
guided me,
and loved me unconditionally.
Seeing her like this is something I will never get used to… but I will never stop fighting for her comfort, dignity, and healing.
๐ผ A Bit of Good News
We received another donation today, bringing our total to R1,000.
We are now just R4,000 away from reaching our goal for her medical supplies, wound-care products, and nutrition.
Every small amount helps her take one step closer to healing at home — safely, comfortably, and without unnecessary suffering.
❤❤❤
๐ฉน What Granny Hazel Still Needs
To help her heal softer, faster, and with less pain, these are the items she still urgently needs:

High-quality beeswax-based healing ointment
Small (current): R320
Large (needed): R600
Antiseptic wound-cleaning liquid

Healthy small snacks
Biotin for skin repair
Multivitamin
Gentle digestive support
✨ Comfort & Heart Support
When they clean the wound, she gets heart pains and becomes weak.

A natural relaxer (doctor-approved)
Warm comfort items
Supportive pillows for pressure relief

Day 4 Back Home • A Call for Prayer, Support & Comfort
Our beloved Granny Hazel has now been home for four days, safely back in the care of her granddaughter Celeste and my mother Dorothy, who is her full-time caretaker. The transition has been gentle but deeply exhausting for her fragile body. What is an easy one-hour trip for most of us… becomes a full 24-hour healing process for Granny.
These past few days, she has been sleeping most of the time, conserving the little energy she has left. Today when I phoned her, she softly said,
“Please keep praying for my pain to go away.”
She remains so deeply grateful for every prayer, every donation, every message of kindness. She feels your love.

๐ฉน Health Update – A New Wound & Rising Concern
This morning we discovered a new wound on her left leg, and it appears to be turning septic. With her age, pain levels, and the dementia episodes that come and go, this is a serious concern and needs urgent care.
So far, we have raised R1 700 through the fundraiser.
Based on our last budget breakdown, we still urgently need:
๐ URGENT BUDGET RECALL
Remaining amount needed: R2 800
Goal: R5 000
Transport to clinic / wound care
Medication for infection & pain
Supplements
Wound dressings & antiseptic
Food + home essentials
Caregiver support
Emergency buffer for unexpected declines
Every single donation helps us get these essentials in place immediately.

๐ “The Little Man in Green Pants…” – What Does It Mean?
My mom shared something emotional and confusing:
Granny has been seeing a small little man in green pants in her room, and she says he is kind to her.
This can mean a few things in elder care:
Possible Explanations
Dementia visual hallucinations – very common when pain is high.
Fatigue or dehydration – can cause vivid images.
Pain medication side effects.
Spiritual comfort experiences – many elderly people see peaceful figures when the body is weak or tired, especially those with deep faith.
Hallucinations in the elderly do not always mean danger — sometimes they are the mind’s way of creating comfort in moments of fear or physical decline. What matters is that the figure she sees feels kind to her, and does not distress or frighten her.
Still, this is a sign that her condition needs close monitoring, especially with infection now rising.
๐ต๐ต๐ต
๐ธ Her Faith, Her Heart & Her Legacy
My granny has always been a servant of God, a gentle soul who helped every homeless person in our community. She attended their funerals. She prayed for strangers. She loved without expecting anything in return.
Everything I know about
love, respect, and loyalty
I learned from her.
She deserves comfort.
She deserves dignity.
She deserves every minute we put into helping her now.
๐๐๐
๐ผ Why This Fundraiser Matters
We don’t know how much time we have left with her.
Some days she is fully herself…
Other days, the dementia pulls her away, and she feels like she is “flying” or drifts into long naps.
This is why our fundraiser is not just financial — it is emotional, spiritual, and urgent.
I am fully committed to:
๐ The Hazel Elderly Foundation
My long-term dream is to honor her life by creating a foundation to support other elderly people living in pain, poverty, or loneliness.
๐ Affordable Elderly Funeral Plan (Begrafnis Plan)
A second long-term goal is to work with government programs to create affordable plans for families who can’t afford funerals for their elders.
This journey with Granny is what planted that seed.
๐ต๐ต๐ต
๐ข A Heartfelt Call for Help
If you are reading this, please:
๐ Pray for her pain to ease
๐ค Donate if you can
๐ฃ Share her fundraiser to help us reach the last R2 800
Every contribution, big or small, brings comfort to Granny Hazel in a moment where it truly matters.
From the bottom of my heart,
Thank you for standing with us.
Thank you for being part of her final chapter written with dignity, love, and community.
๐๐❤
๐ Why We’re Fighting So Hard
She made me who I am today.
She raised me with love, discipline, respect, and values.
Every part of my heart carries her fingerprints.
And now it’s my turn to be strong for her.
To stand up for her.
To help her heal the way she deserves — with dignity, comfort, and peace.
Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared, or simply kept her in your prayers.
Every bit of help brings us another step closer to taking her pain away.
We still need R2 800 to reach the goal.
But with love, community, and faith… we will get there.
๐ผ For Granny Hazel.
๐ผ For comfort, for healing, and for hope.

A Daughter’s Cry, A Granddaughter’s Memory, and a Woman’s Truth
This morning, with my coffee warming my hands, I scrolled through my photo gallery and felt something inside me break open. I saw Granny Hazel ๐ต and I realised how quickly she has become frail, how fast life changed right in front of our eyes… and how far away I’ve been while it happened.
She’s in Dendron.
I’m in Vredenburg, Cape Town.
And that distance… it’s not just kilometers.
It’s lost time, missed moments, empty chairs at family gatherings…
It’s guilt, heartbreak, and memories you can never get back.
I saw her only once this year ๐ after eight years of not being able to be there.
Eight years of life happening, quietly, painfully, without me by her side.
๐ต๐ต๐ต
๐ The Pain No One Sees
I wasn’t there when she got hurt.
I wasn’t there when she found out she was going blind.
I wasn’t there through her weakest days, the days she tried to hide her loneliness, her fear, her confusion.
And somewhere inside me, all the memories of my grandfather rise up again…
Memories that feel like yesterday.
๐๐๐
๐ซ The Day the World Changed — 23 December 1998
That was the day my grandfather died.
A man who was the rock of our family.
The leader.
The provider.
The only man I ever trusted.
When he died, something in me ๐ something in all of us ๐ died too.
I will never forget the sight of my grandmother wearing pants for the first time in her life… to his funeral.
Or the way she tried to climb into the coffin with him.
Or how she begged him that morning to get up because she could not accept that he was truly gone.
That kind of grief does not fade.
It does not soften.
It becomes a shadow that lives in the corners of your heart forever.
And for her… it never healed.
Christmas wasn’t Christmas anymore.
Family gatherings fell apart.
We all drifted.
And one Christmas Day, we found her in the dam ๐ trying to follow him to the other side.
She has lived 25 years without the love of her life, and every day has felt like a battle she did not ask for.
As if that wasn’t enough, she later lost three sons.
Three times a mother’s heart shattered.
No woman deserves that.
๐ต๐ต๐ต
๐ฏ The Unspoken Truth About Housewives When the Husband Dies
We don’t talk about this enough.
We don’t talk about what happens to the women who were housewives their whole lives — the ones who cooked, cleaned, raised children, held families together, gave every part of themselves…
But never handled money.
Never handled accounts.
Never ran a household alone.
Never imagined being abandoned by life like this.
When the husband dies…
the world becomes cruel.
Suddenly she must make decisions she never had to make.
She must navigate bank accounts, bills, repairs, paperwork… alone.
She must learn how to survive with no skills the world values, no income, no support system.
And on top of that ๐ she must carry her grief like a stone in her chest.
These women fall through the cracks of society.
Forgotten.
Invisible.
Left to survive on scraps of pensions and the occasional kindness of family ..... if they’re lucky.
This is where Granny Hazel stands today:
Old.
Blind.
Heartbroken.
Moving from place to place because she has no stable home.
Too weak to walk without help.
Too fragile to live alone.
But still trying to hold onto a dignity she deserves.
๐ต๐ต๐ต
๐ฅ Every Day Feels Like Her First… and Her Last
Every day, I wake up wondering if she’s okay.
If she slept.
If she ate.
If she fell.
If she cried herself to sleep again.
We don’t know God’s plan.
We don’t know how many more days, weeks, or months we have with her.
What we do know is this:
Even though Granny has been ready for over 25 years to join my grandfather,
God has kept her here.
For a reason.
And maybe — just maybe — part of that reason is for us to love her, care for her, and fight for the dignity she has forgotten she deserves.
๐๐๐
๐ป R2,200 Raised — R2,800 To Go
Help Us Give Her Safety, Comfort & Peace at Home
We have raised R2,200 so far — thanks to seven beautiful hearts.
We still need R2,800 to reach our goal.
Month-end is here, and from now until 1 December, every R20, every R50, every share helps.
This is not just about my granny anymore.
This is about every elderly person who has been forgotten.
Every grandmother sitting alone in a quiet room.
Every widowed woman who has lost her home when she lost her husband.
Every elder who is still waiting for someone to care.
๐๐๐
๐ The Birth of Hazel’s Elderly Foundation
Because no elder should suffer alone
When this journey started, it was about Granny Hazel.
But now I see it clearly…
Her story is the story of thousands of elders across South Africa.
Weak.
Lonely.
Afraid.
And forgotten.
I cannot save them all — but I can start.
And so, I am planting the first seed of Hazel’s Elderly Foundation — a future project dedicated to helping elderly people live safely, comfortably, and with dignity in their last years.
Because no elder should face the world alone.
Not my granny.
Not yours.
Not anyone’s.

๐ป “Forgotten But Not Invisible — The Daily Hardships of South Africa’s Elderly”
In South Africa, thousands of elderly citizens live alone, unseen, and unsupported. Many, like Granny Hazel, face daily battles with illness, limited mobility, and the rising cost of basic medical care.
For those without a steady pension or family help, even a roll of gauze or a healthy meal becomes a luxury.
Our elders once built and cared for families and communities ❤ now it’s our turn to care for them.
❤❤❤
๐ The Reality for South Africa’s Elderly
๐According to the Department of Social Development, more than 2 million elderly South Africans rely solely on their state pension of around R2,180 per month — barely enough to cover rent, medication, and food.
Many live with untreated chronic conditions like arthritis, diabetes, or hypertension. Others lack access to transportation for clinic visits or basic medical supplies such as bandages, sterile gauze, or pain relief medication.
Loneliness and depression are also common, especially for elders separated from family or living in rural areas without community programs.
Inflation, high healthcare costs, and food insecurity make survival a daily struggle.
๐ฉน What We Can Do?
❤ Every small act of kindness counts. You can help by:
๐ Donating or sponsoring a Health & Nutrition Box for an elderly person in need.
๐ Sharing their stories and raising awareness online.
๐ Volunteering with local organizations that provide home visits, grocery drops, or companionship to elders.
One roll of gauze, one supplement drink, one meal ❤ that’s hope delivered.
