Room 5 - A light that went out to soon
The Pain by Tanyaeyssen75πͺ ROOM 5 — A LIGHT THAT WENT OUT
TOO SOON
When you’re
a child, you don’t always understand what you’re seeing — but you feel
it.
We were
staying in a run-down building in South Durban, the kind of place where people
go when they’re out of options. We shared a bathroom with strangers. The
hallways smelled like old cigarettes and sadness. I was about 12 years old,
scared, but learning how to pretend I wasn’t.
That’s
when she moved into Room 5.
She was
young, beautiful, and full of life. I remember her laughing in the hallway the
first day. She looked like she still believed something good could happen. I
watched her from afar, quietly hoping life would be kind to her.
But
within two weeks, everything changed.
One
afternoon, I passed by her room. The door was slightly open. Inside, seven
people sat in a circle. They were passing something around — a glass pipe
shaped like a broken lightbulb. I didn’t know what I was seeing at the time. I
just remember them spitting on the floor between them and falling back as if
they had left the room, left the world, even left their bodies.
I was
frozen. Terrified. Curious. Confused.
After
that, I saw less of her. Her voice disappeared. Her eyes dimmed.
And then, one morning, we woke up to flashing ambulance lights dancing through
the hallway window.
She had
overdosed.
She was gone.
Room 5 was empty again.
It took
me years to realize they were smoking tik — meth. That what I had witnessed was
addiction stealing someone in real time.
That
image... never left me.
π NOW I SEE THE SIGNS IN MY OWN CLOSE FAMILY
Life went
on. I can’t say I never tried things. I can’t say I didn’t run from pain. But I
found my way back.
Now I see
signs in someone I love — my family member — and it’s a different kind of heartbreak. A
silent scream. One I paint through. One I rescue through.
This is why I write. This is why I fight.
πΎ WHY I PAINT, RESCUE, AND RECLAIM
BROKEN THINGS
I rescue animals because I know what it feels
like to be abandoned.
I create upcycled art because I know what it means to be thrown away — and
still be worth something.
I write stories like this because someone out there might feel seen, just for a
moment.
π± WHAT HELPS ME STAY GROUNDED (AND
HEAL)
I’ve
gathered a few things that are helping me stay mentally and physically grounded.
If you're navigating stress, anxiety, or trauma, these may help. (These are
Amazon affiliate links — every bit helps my rescue efforts.)
π§♀️ 1. Ashwagandha Capsules
A natural herb that helps with anxiety and stress. It’s helped me sleep better
on nights when memories return.
π 2. Vitamin B Complex
Supports my nervous system. I notice I feel more stable on tough days.
π 3. Healing Journal / Sketchbook
I draw, write, and let my emotions flow here. Not everything can be said out
loud — some things need a page.
π―️4. Calming Spray (for pets & space)
I use this to calm rescued animals, but I also spray it around my space. It
helps both of us feel safe.
π¨ 5. Acrylic Paint Kit / Brushes
Art is medicine. It saved me more than once
π TO ANYONE WHO’S BEEN THERE
If you've
ever watched someone you love disappear into addiction…
If you’ve ever lived in fear, in silence, or in rooms filled with secrets…
I want you to know: You are not alone.
I carry
those memories, but I also carry light.
And I pour it into every animal I rescue, every piece I repaint, and every
story I write.
